From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
Sirs: Your proposed package of taxes and regulation cannot achieve the goal of a free, independent press. You cannot re-create a past era of print by means of punitive actions against the newly successful in the field. You cannot and must not create a state-funded journalist training program and cannot and must not use state funds to support particular journalists. Efforts of this type will do nothing but further damage the reputation of traditional journalism, drive circulation lower, and enhance the relative value of the non-traditional (i.e. "Drudge" for your purposes) sources of information. You cannot possibly think that you can extract billions to bail out your favorites (Wash Post, NY Times?) and that somenow the injection of cash and the creation of state-sponsored news will resurrect the golden years. You will fail to tax the news business back to the past. Thank You.
