From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
I understand there is a proposal to tax internet and cell phone users to support print media. I am totally against this. If print media cannot survive on it's own then it should fail. Why should the FTC get into supporting old technology particularly by taxing new technology. This would be like taxing gasoline to support raising horses back in the early 1900's as the automobile was becoming a predominant transportation option. There comes a time when technology advances to a point where it no longer makes sense to hold on to the older technology. This has happened several times in recent history. This time is fast approaching for the print industry. Besides, there are probably significant environmental benefits for an electronic information age as there will be less consumption of paper and ink and the trash associated with discarded newspapers and magazines.
