From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
The things being proposed by the FCC are an outrage. A "bailout" of "traditional" journalism? Obviously journalism will continue without new taxes (during these hard times at that). That is evident by the fact that other journalistic outlets are thriving in other forms such as the internet. Someone at the top of the FCC is fond of the "traditional" media and does not want to see it go. It is an outrage that anyone would consider tax dollars as a way to prop up this industry. This will cause the government to be in control of the media. Any industry that survives only through government support is subserviant to the government, and of course the government can only do this by taking money from taxpayers. Whether Democrats or Republicans are in office, this idea will lead to government run media, which takes away accountability in government, and that is a dangerous thing for our freedom. Any industry that cannot survive in today's times should be allowed to die or change. That is the way of any evolutional process. The idea of proping up "traditional" media is similar to an idea of proping up VHS cassettes for the sake of not letting DVD's wipe them out. It is counterproductive and a waste of taxpayer dollars that rivals any of the worst ideas the government has ever suggested or put in place. I am not a part of any political group. I am just a concerned citizen who cannot stand to witness the stupidity being expressed by our wasteful government.
