From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
The concept of a FREE Press requires an independent press--totally independent of ANY GOVERNMENT INFLUENCE CONTROL OR SUBSIDY! Even in the name of fairness and justice Journalism, including news, information and opinion must never be taxed--or supported by taxes or it ceases to become free and independent and becomes a mouthpiece for the government. Just ask those in China, N. Korea and Russia how that's worked to the benefit of the populace! For those who wish to control or influence the free speech of others--particularly journalism they think is inaccurate or unfair--I say all laws and rules should be fit for the goose as well as the gander! Anything you do to control others speech can just as easily be turned around on you! Contrary to what Marshal MacLuhan said, the medium doesn't matter, the content does. However, when the government gets involved in controlling the medium it also controls the content. The FTC (and the FCC) has dubious legal grounds for even inquiring into this field and should back out immediately!
