From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
The supposed purpose of this "proceeding" is to save the media and journalists who are threatened by the increased use of the internet as a media for news. However, the end result of taxation on any sort of communication is, in fact, a form of censorship and will put in place the machinery for governmental control of all written forms of speech. This is in direct violation of everything America has stood for, particularly freedom of speech. If the traditional "media" cannot survive on their own, then they should either adapt themselves to changing demands or go under. No other truly free, Western country has such government control, intervention, or even involvement in its press; government taxation is simply another step towards a dictatorship or politburo. I don't believe the American people will put up with this grabbing of power very much longer, and even those who are advocating such a move will live to regret their actions.
