From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
Dear FTC, I can tell you how journalism will survive the Internet Age...it will adapt itself to new forms of technology, just as my industry, printing, has weathered the advent of the digital press. No, we don't strip film negatives to make plates anymore, but our industry is alive and well and did not require any government interference to make the necessary adaptations. Hard copy newspapers and magazines will be slimmer and develop online editions; this has already happened. It's called a "trend". Nothing sinister or fatal here. The sinister factor is that a government agency wants to step and in "fund" things. You are inviting the introduction of political ideologies into government funding of, or withholding funding of, publications. This is plainly unconstitutional. The American people see right through these efforts. Butt out.
