From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
I believe that the plan for the “Reinvention of Journalism” is egregious and detrimental to the future of Free Speech in this country. It is an abuse of power for the Federal Government to tax the American people to provide bailouts to failing journalistic enterprises that do not satisfy a public need. It they were providing a useful product then they would succeed in the market place. It is a further abuse of power to create a “journalism division” within the the Government funded AmeriCorps to in order to create a new generation of journalists who will owe their allegiance to those who gave them grants and other funding as opposed to providing a free and critical press that is essential to a successful republic. Such an effort will produce an official government propaganda organ in the guise of a free press. This is reminiscent of Pravda: "(??????, "Truth") a leading newspaper of the Soviet Union and an official organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party between 1912 and 1991." - Wikipedia. Truth was not what Pravda purveyed. Lastly, it is patently partisan to single out news aggregators and other freedom-enhancing sources of information for taxes to create a $35 billion “Citizenship Media Fund”, thereby forcing citizens to contribute to the support of businesses of which they disapprove and which are acting against the Constitution.. The FCC is acting in a totalitarian manner that is not worthy of the Nation you profess to serve. Your plan usurps the legislative power of Congress as granted in Article 1 Sections 1, 7 and 8 of the Constitution. This Reinvention of Journalism Plan directly contravenes and attempts to subvert the 1st Amendment rights of Americans to have a free press and free speech. This insidious plan must not be implemented. MLS
