From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
This is not a plan to reinvent journalism. It is merely a plan to shake down the American public and successful news organizations by imposing some new taxes. The FTC proposes five new taxes: 1) A Tax on broadcasters 2) A Tax on consumer electronics 3) A Spectrum auction tax 4) Advertising Tax 5) ISP Cell Phone Tax After the FTC gets its cut, they'll let their favorite failing newspapers in on the action. How will this foster a free press when someone in the government will be deciding how much money to give them? The irony is that most journalists, (e.g. Clarence Page, or Brian Greenspun) write articles about the radio or television shows all the time. Where is the provision for the newspapers to reimburse their favorite broadcasters.
