From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
This set of proposals runs absolutely counter to every principle this country is founded upon. The more government involvement in journalism and the news industry, the more government control. The U.S. government should not be involved AT ALL with the business workings (or lack thereof) of the current newspaper business model -- would the current FTC have outlawed self-dial telephones, the better to preserve the jobs of operators? Denied automobiles the right of the road the better to preserve the use of horse and buggy? The answer is, of course, no, and the answer to this proposal should be resounding rejection as well. Newspapers can either adapt to new technology, or die. The only appropriate action to take on this topic is to REJECT IT OUTRIGHT. Journalism in general is already biased; government intervention would only worsen the situation.
