From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
This action by the US government is another attempt by the government to get involved in free enterprise. The market will fix itself and the news organizations will find a way to harness the internet and make it profitable. There are very profitable new organizations currently. These organizations produce a product that the public wants. Those that are failing need to be more creative. This is what has made our country what it is today. If the government starts funding various organizations to report the news, it will require the government to decide which organizations will receive the funding. This in itself is a very troubling path which there may be no return from "state run media". This cannot happen. Another issue is to proposed taxes to pay for this subsidization of the new media. We cannot afford more taxes, period. The internet allows anyone to start a blog and to report "news". This allows the reporting of even hyper-local at very low costs. The government needs to stay out of this issue and let the free market dictate how and who provides media.
