From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
The idea of the FTC attempting in any way to be involved in the changing field of journalism is ridiculous. It is akin to the FTC attempting to prop up the record industry because cassette tapes were taking over, or protecting the cassette industry from the invasion of the CD revolution. It's NONE of the government's business. Old forms of communication are changing. The market demands it. Consumers demand it. The FTC's job is to protect consumers, their safety and freedom of choice. It is NOT to prop up a dying industry. I am a writer and copyeditor. I work freelance for various newspapers, magazines and a book publisher. The field of journalism is changing. I must change with it and so must the rest of the country. The government must stay out of it and let the market adjust.
