From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
This whole effort is directed at more government control of journalism, primarily to diminish the impact of conservative news outlets such as Fox News and the Wall Street Journal. The current administration has made no secret of its animus against these outlets, and even launched a "war" against Fox News in 2009. The US Government needs to keep out of the news business. More government involvement means more government control of the news. This is dangerous. A prime example is PBS. Since the demise of "Firing Line," all PBS news programs are openly liberal and pro-Obama. There is no offsetting conservative programming. PBS is manifestly not the "most trusted and unbiased institution among nationally known news organizations." (Who in the world did you poll? The Harvard faculty lounge?) And yet, American tax dollars go to provide funding for this far-Left news organization. This is just wrong and, as one of the majority of conservative Americans, I find it deeply offensive. The FTC has zero business getting involved in the regulation and taxing of news gathering. We want less government, not more.
