Healthplans are providing priviate data to vendors they contract with to assit individuals enrolled in their health plan manage certain aspects of the the individual's health. When asked the healthplan will indicate that some form signed by the individual authorizes them to provide this service and for the vendor to access private health information. As an HR professional and as an individual consumer of healthcare insurance I question this approach. Plan participants have questioned how the plan received the authorization for providing information to the vendor providing the personalized healthcare managment services and have expressed that they feel violated by the phone calls they receive from these vendors who know what medications they are taking and certain details of their healthcare needs seemingly without permission to this data. I and others feel that health care management is a private issue they wish to discuss with their Dr. and would rather they and their Dr. initiate contact with vendors available to offer healthcare mangement services as the Dr. and individual feel necessary. Group healthcare plans need to provide insurance and not healthcare management services.
