Statement of Policy Regarding Communications in Connection with Collection of a Decedent’s Debt, Project No. P104806

It is bad enough having a debt collector call and harass you while you are alive, the idea of letting the collectors have the ability to contact non-obligated family members, friends and neighbors after death in order to do any more than collect basic contact data is deplorable. If anything we need to strengthen regulations to protect the grieving family and friends. What if you are a long time friend or family member who had lost contact and the first news you hear about your friend/family members death is from a collection agency. How terrible would that be? Debt collectors abuse their role now, they do not need any more power to deceive American consumers. I understand the need to collect debt and after the estate has been settled and all obligated parties if any have been contacted then that is where the collectors boundaries should stop. When my parents pass and I get a call from a collector demanding I pay any of their debts I will be more than upset with the collector and the FTC for allowing this. Please do not allow this to forward.
