Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims, Project No. P954501

I would like to bring something to your attention in reference to the environmental marketing claims that are being made by promotional product suppliers that sell "environmetally friendly" polypropylene (PP) tote bags, most of these supplier claim that their bags are recyclable and made from recycled content, however polypropylene does not contain recycled content, only RPET material does. The misconception is with the term "recycled" that these suppliers use in their product descriptions. They have their PP bags manufactured overseas and the factories cut the polypropylene material to make the bags and the leftover scraps of material they use to make the bag handles and reinforce the seams, they consider this to be using recycled material becuase they are using up the scraps but the truth is the material does not contain any recycled content, it's a play on words. I recommend you inform the suppliers from the promotional associations www.asicentral.com and www.ppa.org about your upcoming rulings. Thanks
