Please do not weaken the existing consumer laws! Fair Debt Collection Practices Act should protect consumers particularly those dealing with a loss of a loved one. Too often companies outsource their debt collection to unscrupulous 3rd parties who incentivize their employees to collect money with any means necessary. Having been subjected to this when my grandfather passed away, I can tell you personally that it is more than unpleasant. I had one agency threaten to tell all my "friends, coworkers and neighbors" that I wouldn't pay up. No matter how often I told them that I was under no obligation to pay this bill as I was not part of (nor received anything from) the estate, they kept calling me at home, on my cell phone and at work. They even threatened my credit rating! They prey on people's fears and emotions. I can't even imagine how much worse it will get once the laws are loosened. I knew I had no obligation but will most consumers? What about the elderly? They can be so easily pressured. If anything, the laws need to be tougher against these types of debt collectors. Ignore the lobbyists! Stand up for consumer rights! Thank you.
