Announcement of Public Workshop, "Examining Health Care Competition" ("Health Care Workshop") Project No. P13-1207
PAs provide medical care in all 50 states and face considerable barriers in every one of them. A few are states with rules that are archaic like 10%-20% of charts must be reviewed or "supervision" must be "direct" for the first six months. Neither of these has been shown to do anything but increase costs and decrease the ability for PAs to practice. There are more as many of our laws were written for a new profession close to 50 years ago and we are now a proven profession with a 50 year track record. Then there are the problems of discriminatory rules made up where PAs can not own a medical corporation which again stops a PA from starting a clinic as they have to give 51% to a physician before they even open their door. This effectively cuts off PA clinics in many states where our care is needed. Also the inability to become a partner decreases the ability for an organization to retain or recruit a PA or NP who may have built a clinic but can not be retained so a physician is brought in and offered a partnership. PAs need your support and help just as you have offered it to nurse practitioners. Our barriers are similar as the care we provide is-so why not? I thank you in advance for getting involved with my profession to decrease barriers so that we may provide care to all Americans. Dave
