Comments:It is unfortunate that Maine food prices in general our considerably higher than surrounding New England states. These higher prices are probably driven by the fact that unlike the surrounding New England states, we only have few demographic areas of centralized populations. Unlike these other New England states, we tend to not have all benefits of supply and demand that higher population numbers tend to generate: Centralized population tend to dictate prices since they have more retailer options and they can reflect through the purchasing patterns what they are willing to pay for their desired goods. Putting Trader Joe’s in the former Wild Oats location will drive more competition with the larger retail chains and hopefully give drive the food prices down through further competition.
