Comments:We are familiar with Trader Joe's from visits to other states, and for a long time we have been hoping Trader Joe's would come to Portland, Maine. Wild Oats came to Portland and built and opened next to our excellent locally owned Whole Grocer, forcing it out of business. Then Whole Foods moved in on Wild Oats, buying it out and letting the building stand empty. We and our friends are very much in favor of having Trader Joe's move in to the Wild Oats building. It would be a great addition to Portland, and would complement rather than threatening Hannaford's, Shaw's, and small local markets. Whole Foods needs competition. Maine is a poor state, and Whole Foods is oriented to an upscale market. Whole Foods is self-serving and not user-friendly: except for the wine, meat and seafood areas, the aisles are very narrow and much of the merchandise is on very high shelves, hard to see and often impossible to reach. They have eliminated small shopping carts. There is no place in the parking lot to leave shopping carts.
