Dear FTC, This is a comment on the propsed changes to the do not call list. When I signed up for the current Do Not Call List, the premise was simple: I do not want to be called at home by marketing companies. period. After enduring the constant barrage of political calls during this year's election, I realized quickly how much time is freed, and how much my frustration level was lowered by having my number on the Do Not Call List. Now, when I receive a phone call, it is almost always a person whom I want to speak with, and another company attempting to sell me a product or service that I have no interest in. The proposed change to allow phone numbers to be called by automated marketing machines completely eliminates any benefit of a program that millions of people have signed up for, and benefitted from. I am not opposed to receiving offers from companies that I have conducted business with in the past, but any communication I receive should have to be explicitly opted in to, and not out of. Again, just because I have conducted a transaction with a company, they should not be able to assume that I ever want to hear from them again without my express written or verbal permission. I have precious few hours of quality time to spend and communicate with my family and friends. I do not wish to have the hours that I do have spent screening calls or deleting unwanted messages from my answering machines. Please do not alter the Telemarketing Sales Rule to allow automated phone calls to be made on behalf of companies I have business relationships with. Instead, if you wish to make a change, require companies to explicitly obtain my permission to contact me once I am a customer. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and consider my opinions.
