The only place my SSN is being used as a unique identifier is my school loans (Direct Loans through the US Department of Education). The remittance payment slip requests that the account number (SSN) be written on the check. If any of the mail being remitted to the Direct Loans payment center were to be intercepted, the violators would not only have the SSN, but also the name, address, and possibly the phone number.
