While I applaud the FTC's efforts to restrict these alcoholic energy drinks, I feel the proposed rulings do not go far enough. On August 1, 2010, my cousin Amy McConnell lost her husband and 3 sons in a DUI-related collision. The 20-year-old drunk driver was speeding in excess of 90 mph when he t-boned the family car. At the bond hearing, he stated that he didn't understand how it could have happened when he only had "2 cans of beer". Well, he drank two cans of FOUR LOKO! Our youth do not understand the concept of "contains 12% alcohol" - they merely see ONE can of beer. Simply stated, they can't do the math. If our society has to keep these products on the shelves, then please consider further restricting the alcohol energy drinks to SINGLE serving size containers. Consumers will then realize they have had a certain number of drinks, equivalent to beer or other alcoholic beverages. Also, please consider banning ALL the stimulants in these drinks including the taurine and guarana, which are just as dangerous as caffeine. I am attaching a picture of the late McConnell family in hopes of adding a personal touch to this difficult situation. Thank you for your time.
