I believe HR 1406 is an egregious waste of Congress's time and taxpayer dollars. The American consumer population is incredibly savvy about their purchasing options for all products, including their veterinary medications. I've been practicing veterinary medicine for over 14 years and I have never refused to write a prescription for a product I carry on my pharmacy shelf. The AVMA's ethics guidelines are clear and don't need to be regurgitated as a redundant Congressional mandate. I do not believe that my clients are too ignorant to realize that the medications I prescribe could be purchased elsewhere. I do believe that online pharmacies should be regulated and inspected more frequently to hold them accountable for storing and selling reliable products--not repackaged expired drugs or drugs that have not been stored in temperature controlled environments.
Please spend your time and efforts protecting my clients from disreputable online "pharmacists", not from their veterinarians.
