I understand the desire to for adequate price competition, yet I do not understand a consideration of mandatory prescription writing. I have practiced as a veterinarian for 22 years and I regularly write prescriptions as requested by pet owners as well as agriculture clients. A mandatory written prescription serves only to add to extra paper work, increased likelihood of prescription misuse (consider such for controlled drugs), and loss of time for the veterinarian and/or veterinary technician. States already require veterinarians to write a prescription if requested by the owner. Common sense dictates that those mandates, as well as the easy access of online and now stores such as Target and Walmart pharmacies, covers the area of price competition. We do not need overlapping and excessive laws and mandates as there are already enough of them on the books.
