I am writing against the Fairness to Pet Owners Act of 2011 (H.R. 1406) which would require MANDATORY prescription writing for all drugs, even ones I may prefer to dispense from my practice due to quality or dosing particulars. As a conscientious veterinarian and member of the community, I am already writing prescriptions or calling in medications, when needed or preferred, for my clients, sometimes to get them a medication we don't carry or sometimes just to save them money. Forcing us veterinarians to prescribe certain drugs could go against my ethical or medical judgement, in some cases, and would infringe upon my rights as a clinician. Please DO NOT support the Fairness to Pet Owners Act of 2011, as it is not at all fair to veterinarians as it removes our autonomy to practice as we best see fit and could potentially endanger our patients with inferior products. The human pharmaceutical professionals are still unaware of numerous differences between animals and humans in regards to medications/side effects and I must be able to have control of what my patients are being exposed to safety-wise. We veterinarians take the care of our patients very seriously and are better able to monitor the quality of medications when we are not forced to prescribe something. Please vote against this bill (HR 1406).
