Human pharmacies are not trained properly to make decisions regarding animal medications. Period. I have had pharmacy staff, working behind the pharmacy counter, tell me that you cannot give 1/2 ml of a liquid medication to give half of the dosage strength of the antibiotic. There are many differences in physiology and how different medications are metabolized by different species, and pharmacists are not trained to know these differences. I have no problem writing a prescription for medications when asked or when necessary, but requiring this to be done every time will increase the likelihood of mistakes, and increase costs of other services provided.
