Pet Medications Workshop, Project. No. P12-1201
I am writing to express my displeasure at the proposed bill to require every medication have a written prescription. In my estimation, this takes away any quality control I have over prescription medications (such as proper dosing, expiration dates and source of supply) out of my hands. I have heard of several incidences of inappropriate dispensing from human and compounding pharmacies in filling written prescriptions lately, which put the pets involved in harms way and was not the prescribers fault. I also feel this will eventually be a detriment to the pet owner as simple convenience of picking up prescriptions at the time of office visit will no longer be available. I cannot afford to keep stock of medications if they are not being dispensed on a regular basis, and thus will no longer be available to offer this as a service.
Under current regulations, I am already obligated to provide a written prescription when requested and I feel that this is sufficient for providing the owner choice in where to fill their pets medications. I do not want this proposed bill to pass.
