"Pet Medications Workshop, Project No. P12-1201"
I oppose, as does the American Veterinary Medical Association, HR 1406 - The Fairness to Pet Owners Act. This bill is designed to deviate medication sales to larger pharmacies by corporations with the outstanding resources to sell drugs at very low profits. As veterinarians, we are trained to understand the physiology of animals and the different species unique response to different drugs. We are also available 24 hours a day to our clients if there is a side effect of a medication, a cost that Walmart and others do not account for as they are not held to this responsibility. Furthermore, there is already a significant problem in human and non-human animal medications involving counterfeit drugs. Adding more pharmacies and areas of drug profit at a large scale may even further increase this serious problem. The most knowledgeable people should be responsible for prescribing and dispensing drugs for companion animals, and those people are veterinarians.
