Intellectual property laws are counter to free markets and innovation, and hurt consumers. Granting monopoly privilege on ideas freezes that idea in time, stopping that idea from being improved on, until the "rights owner" loses their strangle hold on that idea. You cannot own that which does not exist in the physical realm. You cannot legitimately own and arrangement of characters, such as 1s and 0s or letters.
