Navigating the free credit reports is difficult and confusing due to sidetracks into commercial offers and advertising. The numerical credit score should also be free. The October 11, 2009 column in The Washington Post by Michelle Singletary (Business/the color of money section) was quite useful. I agree with most of her comments.
