Thank you for proposing this legislation. It will be very helpful to individuals in the battle against identity theft and fraud. Here are some items that need to be addressed: 1) A combined readable report would be the best way to go. However, In my experience at looking at reports from the various CRAs, often the data is inconsistent. That is, one agency might have the corrent address or credit card information while another CRA may not. By looking at one combined report will these discrepancies be identified so that a consumer can "fix" them and be sure that each CRA has the correct information? There needs to be a way to compare across CRA data. 2) What will be the process for correcting wrong information? Will there be a 45 investigation period? What organization will be responsible for doing the investigation? How will the consumer know which CRA to contact if it's a combined report? Who bares the burden for doing the investigation in a timely manner? What recourse will the consumer have for wrongful or misinformation? I believe it is the CRA's (not a third party)responsibility to investigate the mis-information. So it will be imperative for the consumer to be able to identify which CRA has what info. 3) Will the 7 and 10 year (bankruptcy) rules for how long data is kept in a file still be adhered to? I have found some of the CRA's policies are that information no matter what it is will be kept for 10 years. I think it should be 7 and 10.. not just 10. Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
