Any use of facial recognition technology in any consumer-related setting should be highly suspect because of the potential of abuse. In any environment where an organization/group has access to any type of identifying information, any facial recognition feature/functionality should be an opt-in option. It has been documented in several recent studies that through the use of facial recognition software, the researchers were able to piece together profiles of people from many different locations on the web.
Unfortunately, companies are absolutely atrocious at keeping their promises. This has been demonstrated through every industry. Companies cannot be trusted to keep information private, and safe. Nor can they be trusted to be transparent when it comes to data breaches.
I was extremely upset with Facebook when they rolled out their facial recognition technology and required users to opt-out. Facebook has demonstrated time and time again that they do not care about nor respect their user's right to privacy. If the truth be known, this is probably true about most online social sites.
Because of this lack of respect for users, lack of transparency when it comes to data breaches, and all the other associated issues, I see nothing but all the headaches associated with facial recognition technology. In addition, I shy away from any use of social sites because of these challenges.
