The debt buying and collection industry is totally out of control to begin with! For the FTC to even consider allowing collectors to hound and harass the grieving in order to pursue debts family members may not have any legal responsibility for, is a complete and total contradiction of the protections the FAIR Debt Collections Practices Act is supposed to provide to consumers. Allowing this will only open more doors for further abuse by the debt buying and collection industry where a consumer is presumed to be guilty and forced to spend countless hours and dollars to prove otherwise.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act needs to be strengthened in its protection to consumers, not weakened. Current fines and punishments for violators represent no more than a slap on the wrist to this deep pocketed industry. Fines and punishments need to be a substantial deterrent in order to limit the abuse and illegal tactics consumers are subjected to by this industry!
The FTC should be ashamed of itself for even considering allowing an industry filed with thieves, thugs, felons and liars who will forge documents, produce false affidavits and purger themselves in court in order to collect on inflated debts often purchased for pennies to dictate changes to the FDCPA!
