Re: CAN-SPAM Act Rulemaking, Project No. R411008 To the Commissioners, I appreciate your trying to deal with the problem of unsolicited bulk email. We all get our share. I am a little worried about the plan for making sellers keep “suppression lists.” There are so many problems and costs possible with this idea, and so much loss for both sellers and buyers, that I feel I must ask you to think this matter very carefully. Having to use “suppression lists” will hurt many of the good publications found on the net. My own worry is the possible hurt this might cause to publishers who already ask for permission from the customers before adding them to their list. These are not the people CAN-SPAM was designed to stop. However, I am afraid this new rule will probably do just that. This can harm customers because these suppression lists could easily fall into the hands of spammers, leading to more spam instead of less. I ask that you please, please think about the possible problems this new rule could have, and ask you in the strongest possible terms to rethink putting this rule into effect. Not every seller or merchant is a spammer and the customer should be able to make their own decision about whether to accept information offered. Thank you for considering my opinion. Sincerely Karen Large California, USofA
