Re: CAN-SPAM Act Rulemaking, Project No. R411008 To the Commissioners, Reading through the form to get to this comment section made my head spin a little. The jargon is not all familiar to me. I hope my comments make sense to you. Thank you for taking action to curb the unsolicited spam that fills our in boxes and spam assassin tools. it is a problem for all who use the internet, but a major problem for us that use the internet for business. We carefully send emails to those that request it and always have a "remove me" link at the bottom, so if they decide they no longer want these emails, "click" and they are gone. I also have a prayer site that I advertise with a "signature" on non business related emails (like this one). I would definitely be disappointed and harmed financially if I was not able to continue doing this, or if I had to be constantly comparing lists to lists and compiling list of those that are deleted from my lists (which happens automatically now). I do not believe the suppression lists serve your purposes, but actually block legitimate commerce. The offshore spammers will harvest email addresses from them and continue bombarding us with their trash. Legitimate businesses will either be forced out of business or get caught up in litigation if the rules are too oppressive. Please consider this matter carefully before making a final decision. The goal is to stop unsolicited email, not stop legitimate business. Please be sure your final rules support this distinction. We found our business because we put out on the net we were interested in starting a home based business. We received many emails (and still do to some extent) telling us about different home based businesses. We can stop those particular emails by clicking on the remove me from your list link at the bottom and that's that. We are fine with this; after all entrepreneur ship is the American way. And we are looking for partners, not people that we can bug into signing up to buy something from us. Another problem this will cause is giving the illegitimate spammers access to a big list of current email addresses that they can copy and send spam to. So, instead of stopping them, you may be aiding and abetting. I hope you take my concerns seriously and act in the best interests of all the people in a balanced, thoughtful, wise manner. That is what I envision for you. Sincerely, Peter Stickney, RScP 2659 Victoria Drive Santa Rosa, CA 95407 707 579 9348 Fax: 707 528 7486 Cell: 707 478-6752 http://www.SharePrayer.com
