Re: CAN-SPAM Act Rulemaking, Project No. R411008 Suppression lists may sound like a good idea at first, but they will only cause harm to the Internet's commercial viability. Suppression lists will force worthwhile, legitimate publications, to which people have knowingly subscribed, out of business. This will be as true of publishing giants as it will of one-person operations. CAN-SPAM was not meant to put legitimate publications out of business, but R411008 will do exactly that. You should also be aware that some people often unsubscribe from a list with one e-mail address, then re-subscribe with another address. Others unsubscribe when taking vaction, then re-subscribe when returning. It has also been my experience that many recipients are simply unwilling to follow unsubscribe directions, and will then blame the publisher for being a spammer. Some of these recipients will reply to a mailbox that is clearly marked as automated and never read by a live person. One of the worst potential problems of suppression lists is that they will inevitably be obtained by the spammers themselved, which will lead to even more spam. I urge you strongly to reconsider this ruling. Thank you very much for your attention. Bob Flisser Vice President Nerdy Books, LLC
