Re: CAN-SPAM Act Rulemaking, Project No. R411008To the Commissioners,While I appreciate your efforts to curb the problem of unsolicited bulk email, I am concerned aboutthe requirement that has been proposed for merchants to maintain suppression lists. This is an idea fraught with myriad problems, plus it will cause a lot of damage and is very oppressive to both consumers and online businesses. Therefore, I urge you to reject this oppressive proposal altogether. To foist the use of suppression lists will virtually force us legitimate publishers out of business, and this flies in the face of our basic freedoms of expression. Specifically, if publishers are required to maintain these lists, in addition to already requiring opt-in and double opt-in subscribers, publishers, we will be unduly burdened. The Can-Spam law was not designed to put legitimate publishers out of business, but this proposed requirement is almost certain to do so.Plus, consumers will be harmed, and they won't want their info spread all over the 'net, and this is exactly what would happen!!!Finally, these suppression lists could easily be glommed onto by spammers, causing more spam instead of less.I find it hard to believe that this proposal is actually being seriously considered, and I urge you most strongly to reject this proposal no matter what.Respectfully,Mary WilkeyOhio, USA
