Re: CAN-SPAM Act Rulemaking, Project No. R411008To the Commissioners,I applaud your efforts to curb the problem ofunsolicited bulk email. However, I am concerned aboutthe proposed requirement for merchants to maintainsuppression lists. There are so many problems and costs associated withthis idea, and so much damage done to consumers andbusinesses alike, that I feel I must urge you toconsider this matter most carefully.Requirement of the use of suppression lists willseriously damage many of the legitimate publicationsavailable on the net. My specific concern is for harm topublishers who require permission from the consumerprior to adding them to any list. They're not who CAN-SPAM was designed to put out ofbusiness, but this requirement will very likely havethat effect. There's also the potential for significant harm toconsumers, because of the problem of properly knowingtheir intent when they unsubscribe from a list. On topof that, these suppression lists could easily fall intothe hands of spammers, leading to more spam instead ofless.I was quite surprised at the potential problems thisruling could involve, and urge you in the strongestpossible terms to reconsider its implementation in lightof these problems, I market my email by permission. This will take away my business. I have never had such awesome results before because I am able to automate my business and contact more people. This allows me to stay at home with my child. People just need to use the filters that are already out there. Enforce the fact that you have to put your name and contact info in the email and require a working link for removal. WE have alink that removes from mu autoresponder. I get numerous ones that dont or the link doesnt work or when you reply it gets returned and there is not way to stop those type of spam letters. You dont throw out the dishes with the dish water. It is no different than marketing and getting junk mail in the mail box. If you dont want it, throw it away. If you dont want junk email, remove yourself with the link or use a filter or just delete it. That simple. No big deal! But you cant take my marketing priveleges away and I am sure the people I introduced to my company by email would feel the same way, how else could I reach them. I dont have time to make 16,000 phone calls, but I can sent out bulk emails and promote a legitimate business with permission. Respectfully,Candy SteeleSmyrna Georgia, USA
