I am concerned about the Business Opportunity Rule, Matter No. R511993. I believe it will make it next to impossible for me to do business. I have been a Tastefully Simple Independent Consultant for 4 years. We have very high standards and ethics in how we conduct business. I have grown a large business because of this opportunity. Direct Sales is a way so many stay at home moms can get out of the house and meet new people while also paying off a bill or 2 a month or save for retirement or to provide vacations for their family or even pay all the bills. In my case, I am the substantial breadwinner. I am a wife and mother of 2 and also support my mother who lives with us. Last year, I was finally able to buy a house. I have a mortgage and college is quickly heading our way with our children. I have worked very hard to get where I am and pulled our family out of the need for government aid. I am an American success story and I'm not alone! Our business is already heavily regulated. Our customers have 3 DAYS to change their minds whether they are buying a $5 beer bread or a larger order. If I buy a car for $40K with very hard to understand contracts I don't have 10 seconds to change my mind after I sign on the dotted line. This just makes no sense to me. Also, when someone becomes a consultant they also have 3 DAYS to change their minds! 3 Days is a long time and certainly enough time for anyone who didn't want to do the business to get out. We live in America and are trying to live the American Dream. Why penalize the honest companies out there that are following the rules? The scam artists will ALWAYS find a way to scam hardworking honest people. They are criminals and don't follow the law anyway. And I highly doubt they'd follow any new rules set out for them. My company does business primarily through home parties. We aren't set up to "sign everyone we know quickly". We sell a product at a party and the guests have a good experience. If someone decides they too would like to earn money selling the products then they sign up. It's that simple. The major MLM's that scam people try and sell the idea of recruiting first and foremost with no "real" product available. Too bad we are all lumped into this same category as we are nothing like the MLM's of bad reputations. I don't feel the government needs to protect me from every possible thing that can happen in life. I am free to join any company I see fit AND I am free to quit that company too. Hopefully in the process of making this decision the FTC will remember that there are real people working real businesses and making a real difference in the lives of their families. Please don't take that lightly. My family and millions of others depends on it. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
