Kathleen VanderHeijden June 17, 2006 Federal Trade Commission/Office of the Secretary, Room H-135 (Annex W) 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20580 Re: Business Opportunity Rule, R511993 Dear Sir or Madam: I am writing to express strong opposition to the proposed Business Opportunity Rule R511993. I understand that the Federal Trade Commission must protect the public from "unfair and deceptive acts or practices," but the rule as proposed would make it very difficult for me to operate my business as a Shaklee Independent Distributor. Burdensome and elaborate regulations are not consistent with small business operations such as ours. They would dissuade prospective distributors from considering opportunities such as Shaklee's as a viable option. In this age, where we find increasing disparity between upper and lower income status, we need to keep alternative income producing businesses as simple as possible. I have been a Shaklee Distributor for more than 30 years. Originally, I joined Shaklee because I love the Company's nutritional/personal care/household products and I wanted to buy at the member price, similar to buying at BJ's, CostCo, or any other consumer buying club. The products worked so well for me that I told my extended family and friends about them. This lead to a business that allowed me to work from home. We raised 4 children during that time, and thanks to this very simple home-based opportunity, I was able to be at home with our children and still contribute to the family budget. We still depend on my contribution to supplement this budget. As the years pass, this income will be just as important as my husband looks at retirement. Without it we surely will not have enough to live the modest lifestyle that is ours. Thank you for considering my comments. Sincerely, Kathleen VanderHeijden [For the complete text, please see attachment.]
