Rather than make a lengthy comment, I urge the members of the Commission to view "Calling the Shots, Revised" By Jean Kilbourne of Cambridge Productions. It will take less than a half hour and will show you proof that the alcohol industry is deliberately and cynically attempting to make abusive (excessive and harmful) drinking appear to be normal. Moreover, alcohol advertising seeks to reassure alcoholic and habitually abusive drinkers that there is nothing wrong with the way they are drinking, thus assuring that the industry's lifeblood, or rather deathblood, will not take the steps to recovery but continue on the road to social destruction and death.
Despite the millions spent by the industry and the Koch's of America to influence FDA standards and organize the "Beer Drinkers of America", you people have the potential to change national attitudes that have been twisted by the greedy purveyors of ethanol. People like me, social workers, the entire criminal justice system have spent years trying to save lives and families, and educate the public to a healthier view of alcohol. How futile our efforts when they are thwarted by master psychologists writing ad copy which deliberately misleads our citizenry.
How can you allow this tragedy to continue? You have the means to save children, familes and neighborhoods. If you cannot stop the lies of the alcohol industry, at least require an equal amount of truth - or is counter-advertising against the law?
Damn it, people - do something right and good.
