As a recent victim of identity fraud I can assert that there are no preventive measures to take. In fact the credit bureaus are making a profit by selling watch alerts for a fee. These credit watch services can be bought on line as well as credit reports. These can actually cause further possibility for fraud by informing the thief of what they need to do and what is available.. Once the fraud takes place the burden of proof falls on the victim who has to jump through hoops to prove they are who they say and are asked to send more confidential information to further increase their vulnerability. As for law enforcement...the case load at least in Florida is so great that they rarely investigate even when furnished with actual addresses and phone numbers.
