I work with a low-income, primarily Latino community, and I am concerned that self-regulating in advertising puts this community at a disadvantage. Our population has low-literacy levels, limited access to food preparation and purchasing opportunities, and are experiencing a health disparity as a consequence. Childhood obesity and anemia are both problems in this population. Our data from chart review of children under age 3 found an incidence of anemia of 50% in this population prior to our supportive nutrition programs.
