To Whom It May Concern: It has come to my attention that the FTC is proposing to change the rules related to parental permission required under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. As a parent, I am concerned that the proposed change would not be in the best interest of my child’s safety and well being on the Internet. It is my understanding that the proposed rule would allow a company to simply obtain my consent by asking my child for my email address. I am not opposed to my child interacting with appropriate sites but feel that the reason for COPPA in the first place was to insure that as a parent, I am actively involved in the process of registration and sign-up with my child. Email notification is risky at best considering the amount of spam and junk email that piles up in my email box on a daily basis. Also, given the fact that most kids today have their own email accounts leaves me skeptical that in many cases I might be left out of the process if my child wanted to usurp my authority. As a parent, I am appreciative of your efforts to mandate parent’s involvement in areas where companies marketing efforts require my child’s or my personal information. I hope that all efforts will be made to continue to seek innovative ways to protect the consumer on the Internet.
