FTC: Made In The USA Comments Concerning Inman Mills Inc.--P894219 INMAN MILLS INC. PETER E. DUTOIT August 18, 1997 Made In the U.S.A. Policy Comment Dear Mr. Secretary: 'Made in America" is a slogan which represents that product to be 100% American made. Most Americans have looked upon this label with pride and trust. This label guarantees that the product was made from cotton grown in the U.S., woven in the U.S. and finished in the U.S. by U.S. workers. These workers pay taxes on wages earned in the U.S. If the FTC is allowed to go ahead with their proposal and allow 75 % of U. S. content to be labeled "Made in the U.S.A.", it is a breach of the public trust, deceiving the public and violating the FTC's responsibility to protect the public. In addition, Congress would have to amend the "Buy American Act". The name alone is a truthful representation and attestation that the fabric is 100 % American made. If we allow only 75 % American to be labeled "Made in America" then Congress would have to amend this act to read "Buy 75 % American, 15 % Foreign" made. It is imperative that only 100% American be on all labels marked "Made in America". A SUBSIDIARY OF INMAN MILLS Let us not let the American public nor our foreign consumers down. Americans as well as those abroad depend on "Made in America" for 100% quality. Let us keep the confidence that the label Made in the U/U.S.A.. means exactly what it represents. Sincerely yours, PETER E. DUTOIT PED:sm |
