FTC: Made In The USA Comments Concerning Protexall, Inc.--P894219 August 11, 1997 Office of the Secretary Dear Mr. Secretary: I am the President of a family owned manufacturing company that has been in business since the year of 1889. For over 108 years, Protexall has manufactured and distributed quality American made uniforms to companies all over the United States and currently employ's 150 people. The reason I am writing you today is that I am very concerned about proposed guidelines to relax the restrictions on Made in the USA labels to include items that are few than 100% manufactured in the United States. Protexall takes pride in manufacturing and selling only 100% American made clothing and our customers are very concerned that we maintain these guidelines. It would be next to impossible to enforce our policies if these guidelines are changed. Our industry, as I am sure you are aware of, is very competitive. Foreign companies have all but eradicated the American garment industry by using less than honorable business practices to cheapen their labor costs. The only thing the American companies have to fight against to these kinds of practices is the Made in America label. It implies that the product is 100% manufactured in America and ensures that the conditions under which these items were made are within in accordance with American labor laws. In closing, I am asking for your help by not going forward in adopting these guidelines. Please do not cheapen the worth of Made in America. Please do not cheapen American workers and businesses. Sincerely, Wade Williams Customer Service Phone 309-342-6979
