FTC: Made In The USA Comments Concerning United Food & Commercial Workers, Local 26 - AFL-CIO--P894219 THE SENATE 1ST DISTRICT SUBCOMMITTEES: JOSEPH F. YOUNG, JR. Mr. Robert Pitofsky, Chairman Dear Mr. Pitofsky: Please find enclosed a copy of a letter I received from Sharon Lairy, who serves as President of the United Food & Commercial Workers in Detroit. Ms. Lairy shares her concerns with regard to the "Made in the U.S.A." label. Many share her concerns and are hopeful that as Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission you will take her views into consideration when making any decision on what constitutes a "Made in the U.S.A." product label. Thank you very much for your assistance in this regard. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, JOSEPH F. YOUNG, JR. Enclosure cc: Sharon Lairy LOCAL 26 SHARON LAIRY ROMONA WILLIAMS JUDY DREAVER June 9, 1997 The Honorable Joseph Young, Jr. Dear Senator Young: I am writing on behalf of the Local 26 membership, U.S. working men and women and consumers who need your help. The Federal Trade Commission says "Made in U.S.A." on advertisements and on product labels should no longer have to mean what it says. Currently, for the most part we can be confident that "Made in U.S.A." means "all or virtually all" domestic parts and labor was made by an American. To permit less than "all or virtually all" would be to perpetrate a fraud on the American public and open even wider the door to U.S. jobs being moved overseas. Products that are partially made, not totally made in the U.S.A. could bear a label "partially made in the U.S.A." We urge you not to allow the Federal Trade Commission to make this change in the "Made in U.S.A." label. Sincerely, Sharon Lairy SL/del:opeiu42aflcio |
