The Honorable Robert Pitofsky
Chairman
Federal Trade Commission
Sixth and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20580

Dear Chairman Pitofsky,

I am writing to you to clarify my position on the Federal Trade Commission’s proposal to alter the standard for the "Made in the USA" label.

I regret that my signature was inadvertently attached to the enclosed letter, dated July 31, 1997, that expresses support for the proposed new guidelines. Contrary to the essence of the letter, I do not support lowering the legal standard for "Made in the USA" claims.

Since July 9, 1997, I have been a co-sponsor of H.Con.Res. 80, a resolution that urges the FTC not to lower the standard of the label. American workers and consumers alike rely on the integrity of the strict standard, and I do not believe it should be altered.

Thank you for your consideration of my position.

Sincerely,

John W. Olver
Member of Congress
