RE:“Made in the USA” Policy Comment

FTC File Number P894219

Dear Chairman Pitofsky:

We are writing to express our support for the proposed guidelines regarding "Made in the USA" labeling. These guidelines reflect a well reasoned and considered balancing of various issues in attempting to resolve what is a very complex issue.

As imports in this country have skyrocketed, our domestic industry and our American workers have suffered. Scores of U.S. plants have closed their doors and many American workers have lost their jobs. Numerous manufacturers have publicly stated that a realistic standard as to just what “Made in the USA” really means will allow them to remain in the United States and compete. To impose a standard which they cannot meet is one more encouragement for businesses to abandon U.S. manufacturing for cheap overseas labor. The proposed standards are also in line with other congressional and administrative laws, rules, and regulations including Customs, NAFTA, Buy America Act and auto labeling.

We, along with other U.S. consumers, are concerned about American workers and the quality products they continue to make with pride. The proposed guidelines will further that goal and we commend you on your fair and thoughtful efforts.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Your continued support for the proposed FTC guidelines is well justified and greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Olympia J. Snowe
