FTC: Made In The USA Comments Concerning Tom Bean--P894219 July 30, 1997 Office of the Secretary Dear Sir: I have been reading that your office is considering relaxing the standards for the "Made in USA" label. This worries me very much as I am one of those who spends the extra time reading the labels and searching for the ones that say "Made in the USA." I regret that finding the label in most stores is not even possible and it is always difficult in any store, but the time is well spent. I feel good that I am supporting American workers and my county. I would like to see more products carry the label. However, I do not believe that the answer is to simply relax the standards. This would lead people to believe that similarly made and labeled articles were both made in the USA but the purchase of one that is not fully made in the USA would hurt the workers of America and lead to less work for them and possibly the loss of jobs and plants. I hope that any decision that you and the Commission makes is with consolation with the trade unions of this country and further I hope that your decision meets with their approval. Thank you, Tom BeanTom Bean |
